swoo wrote "Roughly equivalent time, middle ages or so, but The Last Kingdom more closely follows historic figures and places with only a tiny suggestion of magic, also really only one main character versus big cast of GoT."

swoo wrote "Parts of Game of Thrones are based on the real life events that are fictionalized / editorialized in these plays, written to favor the monarchy in power at the time in order to be published. The language is sometimes hard to parse but when one thinks some of the political moves on GoT are implausible, the real life inspirations can put them into perspective as pretty close to real life. (without the magic+dragons)."

9/10 - swoo
Who knew a drama set in a fictional middle ages with magic could be so good, the first couple of episodes throws so many characters and locations at the viewer that it can be overwhelming but it's worth overcoming. The first season is a pretty good match for the first book so one can try reading the book first to see if there is any interest. Gradual decline in writing starts when show passes the books in season 5.

Great show to watch, Medieval Fantasy world done right but painfully violent and gory at times. If you are one of the few who have not watched this series yet, it is definitely a binge-worthy show that will suck you in to the world and make you love and hate the characters.
